Stuart Family

A Family of Entrepreneurs and Pioneers

There once was an ambitious boy living in segregated Alabama.  His ambitions surpassed his local environment as he entered his teenage years.  One day he would pack his grip and decided to move to that big city called Chicago.  As the train rolled into sleepy Indianapolis, William Weir Stuart realized that his money wasn’t going to get him to Chicago.  He made another major decision:  He would jump off the train and start shining shoes at the empty shine stand that he viewed.  He would save up enough money and then complete his voyage to “Chi Town”.  However, God had other plans for the young William Weir Stuart.  Shortly, a particular customer engaged in conversation as William was shining his shoes.  Whatever was said during that conversation must have really impressed the customer.  That customer was none other than the legendary band leader and composer John Philip Sousa.  William left the shine business and became the personal “valet” for one of the most famous persons in the world.  In fact, it would be the world that William would travel with Mr. Sousa.  This youngster from Alabama was now journeying to Russia, Europe and other parts of the world.  He kept a meticulous diary of his travels with Mr. Sousa and I have had the privilege of “thumbing” through it.  It is just fascinating and I wonder where in 19th century Alabama did a young Black get such writing skills.

His tenure with Mr. Sousa was a turning point in the young adventurer’s life.  Upon adulthood Mr. Sousa would sponsor his matriculation at the Indiana Dental School.  I am sure that caused a stir in segregated Indiana but Mr. Sousa would get his way.  Thus, the first Black dentist in the state of Indiana hung his “shingle” and practiced for over 50 years. He would soon meet the lovely MaeLewellynStokes (from Dayton, OH) and they formed a union in 1913 that would produce 9 children.  All of them would become college educated and marry well.  One exception is his son, Bodee, who died in an auto accident in his early 20’s.

As an entrepreneur himself, William taught his children the value of being your own boss.  He invested in building a funeral home and put his sons, Charles and Joseph, in control.  The funeral home was designed and built by Moses McKissack IV who married William and Mary’s daughter Natalie.  The McKissack’s of Nashville are legendary in Black architectural circles.  Daughter Emily would marry a dentist named Lucian Meriwether.  The oldest daughter Katherine (Kay) would marry the prestigious Harvard educated Judge Mercer Mance.  His daughter Aurelia Jane (named after Mr. Sousa’s daughter) would become quite an educator and also marry one of the original four Tuskegee Airmen, Charles H. DeBow Jr. One of their daughters, Kay, would become my wife and mother of my sons.  Oh, I knew what I was doing matching my bloodlines with some of the best!  His oldest son, Marion (Maydee), would start a van and storage company with the investment from his loving father.  Stuart Movers is an institution in Indianapolis today. His son, William Weir Stuart Jr. would become a reputable accountant.

Loving and strong are the best descriptions of the great Stuart clan of Indianapolis.  I remember in the early days of starting a Black chamber in Indianapolis many powerful people became committed to our demise.  I shared this with Aunt Kay and she just smiled and said, “We are not going to let a thing happen to you and my niece.  Go for it!”

Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports has negotiated a $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners for All-Star second baseman Robinson Canó.

According to ESPN, the deal for the 31-year-old Canó is for 10 years and boasts a full no-trade clause.

Canó's deal is the third-richest deal in Major League Baseball history, behind only Alex Rodriguez's $252 million 2000 contract with the Texas Rangers and the $275 million contract extension A-Rod signed with the Yankees in 2007.

Canó's previous agent is not happy about it.
